Mr. Ferdinand Simanullang, Manager of Variable Renewable Energy of the IPP Project at PT PLN (Persero), stated, “We are actively working with the government and PT PLN (Persero) to promote environmentally friendly power plants. This includes undertaking large-scale renewable energy projects, implementing carbon capture and storage technologies, retiring coal-fired power plants, and adopting advanced technologies to enhance sustainability in Indonesia’s electricity sector.”

Currently, fossil energy dominates Indonesia’s energy mix, accounting for 87% with a capacity of 60.8 GW, while non-fossil energy represents only 13% with 8.5 GW. However, there is a target to increase the share of non-fossil energy to 52% by 2030. Challenges to achieving this transition include constraints related to local components, difficulties in obtaining funding, permit-related issues, and the establishment of power plants, as well as imbalances between supply and demand.

A highlight of the Q&A session, where attendees had the chance to pose their questions and gain further insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with renewable energy utilization in Indonesia.

In conclusion, the discussions at the webinar highlighted the government’s commitment to meeting energy demands while transitioning towards renewable energy. Policies have been implemented to maximize the utilization of renewable energy sources, with the aim of reducing emissions and addressing the global climate crisis.

It is crucial for Indonesia to focus on the next 5-10 years, leveraging existing technological resources and striving for cost-effective solutions to fully harness renewable energy. Further studies and alignment with government regulations are necessary to facilitate the construction of solar power plants at the domestic level, encouraging public participation in the transition to renewable energy. The webinar provided valuable insights and fostered discussion on the path to a greener and more sustainable future for Indonesia.
